So this story, while sweet in itself, puts this comment from Luceus in a whole new light (said after Aurora asked him if he could chill with making plans for a while and just go with the flow):

He’s all but outright saying she’s the dearest thing to him.

Pairing that with Aurora asking the goddess for help rescuing him when he sacrifices himself and gets dragged down into darkness, fighting a dragon to get the power to do so, and fighting his own possessed body in order to free him, and you’ve got one of the most protective battle couples out there, and I love it.

So I finished dragon quest heroes and the ending had me dying from how much I love these two (the soft way he says “aye,” my heart) and I choose to believe they live happily every after, with the occasional disagreement in tactics, of course.

I’m aware that I am three years late on this game and there’s probably only about three other people who care, but I can’t get over the rescue scene in dragon quest heroes.

(spoilers, on the off chance anyone is playing it).

So after you both get captured by the bad guy, the character you are not playing as (so for me Luceus) rescues you from being dragged down into darkness by sacrificing himself, and the character you are playing as (for me Aurora) speaks to the goddess to intercede and rescue Luceus. She tells you to challenge the guardian of scales (a big ass dragon) to awaken the power to rescue Luceus (and, you know, the world).

So after fighting your way to the Shrine of Scales and beating the dragon, the bad guy possess Luceus and fights you as him, and you have to beat him to rescue him.

Then Aurora rushes over to him to catch him and they talk.

Pretty cute so far, but then

Which is just the sweetest thing.

AND THEN HE LOOKS AT HER LIKE THIS

This absolute look of soft awe and surprise. Also note: she is still touching his shoulder, she hasn’t let go of him this whole time.

Then he gets awkward and makes a joke as he stands up.

And they decide to leave and join their friends but before they do, Aurora asks the guardian of the shrine about the location of a plot relevant item. The guardian doesn’t know but tells her this

AND THEN THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER

I caught feels so bad, guys.

Like, how can a game which is just a thin excuse for monster fighting manage to have this intense romantic moment between its characters and make me ship them so hard?

Honestly, two childhood friends who bicker but are ride or die for each other + self-sacrifice and rescue is like shipping catnip for me.

And the absolute best thing is that it is equal opportunity rescuing – if you are playing as Luceus, Aurora sacrifices herself to save him, he is the one who brings her back and clings to her, and she is the one who looks at him like that, and pulls away chiding him about being mushy.

I just can’t get over it.
