maura-labingi:

post battle, bilbo sticks to thorin’s side almost aggressively, only leaving to gather news so that he can keep thorin up to date on things. thorin can’t really talk but he smiles a lot and squeezes bilbo’s hand and looks sorry, bilbo is short with him and reprimands him almost constantly and goes on in a very hobbitish manner. he doesnt show it in the traditional way when thorin’s awake of course, but he is perpetually worried

Imagine that when Bilbo got back to his empty house in the Shire, he knew he wouldn’t be able to get all of his furniture back right away, and so that night he sleeps curled up on the floor in front of his fireplace.

(In a way it was oddly reassuring.)

But he looks through his pack to find his blanket, and instead pulls out his red Lake-town cloak. He knew he’d packed it, but he hadn’t needed it on the journey home.

It wasn’t until he wrapped himself up in it that he realised that it was much too big for him, even bigger than his own one had been.

He’d packed Thorin’s one instead, and that first night alone in front of his fire he can’t sleep for remembering how they were almost…

(Even the people of Lake-town knew what they almost were).

But also think of when Bilbo leaves Bag End for the last time, he takes everything from his journey with him, including that cloak. He wears it in Dale as he looks at his oak tree, so big and strong. He wears it in Rivendell when he is cold, though the brightness of the fabric has long faded. He wears it on the boat to the Undying Lands, the sea breeze too much for him in his old age.

Imagine him wearing it when he sees Thorin again for the first time, and tripping over the too-long hem when he runs to him.
