Imagine if Thorin called Bilbo Amralime as he was dying, and afterwards Bilbo asked Balin about it, because he didn’t know what it meant and it sounded important.

Bilbo’s pronunciation is appalling of course, but Balin knows exactly what he means, but he looks at Bilbo, at how he is barely keeping himself together, and thinks it won’t help him to know. So Balin says he’s very sorry, but he doesn’t know.

And Bilbo smiles at him, and says that it doesn’t matter, but his smile is painfully false and Balin never knows whether he did the right thing.

And it’s not until years later, on his last visit to the Shire before he leaves for Moria, when he and Bilbo are outside smoking their pipes under a large oak tree, that Balin apologises and tells Bilbo what Thorin said long ago.

Bilbo’s reply is a rueful little laugh and a “of course he waited until then to tell me.”

And though there is a bit of a sheen in his eyes, Balin notices that his smile is a true one.
